“Xandria, what’s with the glasses?” Of course. Just my luck.

“You like them? I thought they were cool.”

"Right but it’s cloudy,” he says pointing to the sky.

“Who cares? They look good on me.” No, they don’t, they’ve been falling off my face all day.

“Ok. I’m going to ask you what happened, but I need you to not curve my questions.”

“You know what happened,” I reply with stoic in my face..

“I just want to make sure you’re ok.”

“I know but I’m clearly not and you know why. Don’t worry about it. I don’t wanna talk about it right now.”

“Xandria, can you at least let me see your face?”

“I gotta go to the gold shop.” I need to distract him from the current topic. We can’t fix this, why talk about it if we can’t fix it?

“Why?” I pull out the ring that’s cold to the touch. He looks at me and shakes his head, I can tell by the way he studies me then back at the ring, that he wants to confront me about not telling him anything again.

“You stole that from your mom?”

“Yep. Impressive right?”

“Does she know?”

“Not yet.” I was about to wink but my eye is swollen shut so that wouldn’t make sense. As we walk, he barely pays attention to where we’re going because he’s too busy studying my face.

“What the hell did she do to your eye?

I should’ve stayed at school and hid in the music room. My thoughts drift to the iPod in my bag and the song I was teaching myself to play the other day crosses my memory. I can see the black notes dancing on the staff. His voice fuzzed into the background noise of other people talking but he’s calling me.

“Sorry, I didn’t hear you.” I did hear him, I was ignoring him.

“You need to get out of there.”

I laugh a bit because it’s funny that he even brought that up. Where am I supposed to go? I don’t know my mom’s family and my dad is this mystery guy that I never met. So, I don’t really have options here. Homelessness or get beat up as a housing payment, either way I end up stuck.

“How? I have nowhere to go. No other family. Nothing.”

“Me.”

“No, you don’t have to do that,” I reply, shaking my head. I don’t like people doing me favors. They always want something back when they do me favors. I appreciate his offer, but I already see reasons to not do that.

We’ve always been good together and at first it was nice to have someone to stick around, but sticking around became clingy. I explained several times why I stay at school so late some days and still he’s upset that I’m not outside the school after my last class.

That’s my time to just be, and I’ve been getting less of it because of him. I miss it. Though it feels like I’m talking to a wall when I tell him that. Then there’s the incessant questioning of my whereabouts.
